5 mg: Lortab 5 mg tablets are white with blue specks. It is a capsule-shaped, bisected tablet, imprinted with “ucb” on one side and “902” on the other side.

7.5mg: Lortab 5 mg tablets are white with green specks. It is a capsule-shaped, bisected tablet, imprinted with “ucb” on one side and “903” on the other side.

10mg: Lortab 5 mg tablets are pink in color. It is a capsule-shaped, bisected tablet, imprinted with “ucb” on one side and “910” on the other side.

Oral solution

7.5mg/500 mg per 15mL: It is yellow in color with a tropical fruit punch flavor. It contains 7.5 mg hydrocodone bitrate, 500 mg per 15 ml acetaminophen, and 7% alcohol.

How to use Lortab?

Take this medication exactly as directed by your doctor. Make sure to follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in high amounts or for longer than the prescribed duration. It may lead to an overdose which can damage your liver. The symptoms of an overdose include shallow breathing, extreme fatigue, vomiting, small pupils.

Before having any surgery or medical tests, tell the doctor that you are using Lortab.

Avoid drinking alcohol while using this drug. The consumption of alcohol with Lortab can increase the side effects of the drug.

Do not stop using this drug suddenly because you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. The risk of withdrawal is more likely in people who use Lortab in high doses or for a long time. The withdrawal symptoms include restlessness, mood changes, nausea, diarrhea, runny nose, watering eyes, muscle aches, sweating, or sudden behavior changes.

What to know before taking Lortab?

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor if you are allergic to acetaminophen or hydrocodone or have recently used sedatives, alcohol, tranquilizers, and other narcotic medicines.

Avoid using this medicine if you have used MAO inhibitors in the past 14 days. It could lead to a dangerous drug interaction. The MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.

Some drugs can interact with hydrocodone and cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Tell your doctor if you also take the following medications:

  • medicine for depression
  • medicine for mental illness
  • medicine for Parkinson’s disease
  • medicine for migraine headaches
  • medicine for serious infections
  • medicine for prevention of nausea and vomiting

To make sure that this drug is safe for you, tell your doctor if you ever had the following conditions:

  • liver disease
  • diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, or severe constipation
  • a history of drug or alcohol addiction
  • kidney disease
  • low blood pressure
  • mood disorders such as depression, thoughts of suicide
  • difficulty urinating
  • gallbladder disease
  • a disease of the pancreas
  • brain disorders such as head injury, brain tumor, or stroke
  • asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, and other breathing disorders
  • if you use a sedative like Valium such as diazepam, alprazolam, lorazepam, Ativan, Klonopin, Restoril, Tranxene, Xanax, etc.

This drug can cause breathing problems in older adults and people who are severely ill or malnourished.

Do not use narcotic medicines while you are pregnant because your baby could become dependent on the drug. Doing so can cause withdrawal symptoms in the baby after it is born.

Do not breastfeed while using Lortab. The drug acetaminophen and hydrocodone can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby.

Side effects of Lortab

The side effects of Lortab are as follows:

  • lightheadedness
  • dizziness
  • constipation
  • vomiting
  • drowsiness
  • nausea

These side effects may decrease after some time. Tell your doctor if any of these effects persist or worsen.

Serious side effects

  • sleep apnea
  • mental or mood changes such as agitation, hallucinations
  • stomach or abdominal pain

  • loss of appetite
  • unusual tiredness
  • weight loss
  • easy bruising or bleeding

Some other serious side effects of Lortab include fainting, seizure, severe drowsiness, and shallow breathing.

A severe allergic reaction to this drug can occur in some rare cases. The symptoms of a severe allergic reaction include rash, itching, or swelling, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.
