How to use Fioricet?
This medicine dosage will depend upon your age, medical condition, and response to treatment.
You can take this medicine by mouth with or without food as prescribed by your doctor.
Take Fioricet with food if it upsets your stomach.
Taking too much of this medicine may lead to an overdose. The overdose symptoms include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, irregular heartbeat, restlessness, tremors, fainting, sweating, confusion, and weakness.
Do not stop taking this medication suddenly. It may cause withdrawal, and the risk is more likely in people who are using this medicine for a long time or in high amounts. The withdrawal symptoms include mood changes, nausea, vomiting, and seizures.
Do not use this drug in high amounts or for an extended period because it has the potential for physical dependence.
Dosage for tension headaches
Adults dosage: The usual dosage for adults and children 12 years of age and older is 1 or 2 tablets every 4 hours as needed. The total daily dosage of this drug should not exceed six tablets.
What to know before taking Fioricet?
Before taking this drug, tell your doctor if you are allergic to acetaminophen, caffeine, butalbital, or other barbiturates such as phenobarbital or xanthine derivatives.
Before using this drug, tell your doctor if you ever had:
- severe breathing problems such as sleep apnea, asthma
- porphyria, a certain enzyme disorder
- liver disease
- kidney disease
- mood disorders
- stomach problems
- a history of drug or alcohol addiction
- a history of skin rash caused by any medicine
This medicine can make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not consume alcohol while using this drug because it can make you more dizzy. Avoid driving a car or doing anything that requires alertness until you know how this medicine will work for you.
Before having any surgery or certain medical procedures, tell your doctor that you are using this medicine and about all the products that you use.
Old-age people may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug.
Do not use Fioricet if you have used a MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. Doing so could lead to a dangerous drug interaction. The MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine.
This drug could decrease the effectiveness of hormonal birth control pills, patch, or a ring which could cause pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about using some other reliable birth control methods while using this medicine.
Taking this drug too much or too often can cause damage to your liver.
Do not use this drug during pregnancy because it may harm an unborn child. Using this medicine in high doses or extended periods may cause withdrawal symptoms in a newborn, such as irritability, vomiting, abnormal crying, seizures, or diarrhea.
Do not breastfeed while taking this drug because it passes into breast milk and could have undesirable effects on the baby.
Side effects of Fioricet
The side effects of Fioricet are as follows:
